INTRODUCTION

The practice of Wheelchair Handball (WCH) attracts more participants every day, as well as professionals interested in this new modality for disabled persons, and the number of championships organized grows. To the improvement of the game, it would be necessary the acknowledgement of technical performance of the teams during the competition, so that it could subsidize the work of coaches. Thus, this study has as main goal to examine the technical performance of the teams that participated a championship disputed in Toledo, a brazilian city.

METHOD/RESULTS

This descriptive and transversal study, collected data with a sheet summary by (CALEGARI et al, 2006), registering the actions of the game: Technical Errors, Finalization Errors and Attack Effectiveness, which are international elements used in all sportive competitions, to examine both individual and group performance. The data were collected during the 2nd West Cup of Wheelchair Handaball, on May 26th and 27th, 2007, in Toledo city. In the competition there were 4 teams: ATACAR/SESI/TOLEDO “A”, ATACAR/SESI/TOLEDO “B”, teams that practice handball in the university; ADEFIU/UNIPAR / UMUARAMA, wheelchair basketball team, that join handball competitions and practices in the same university, but in another city; and APEDEF/PONTA GROSSA, a team in deployment stage, that practices both, basketball and handball, in a private school in the city of Ponta Grossa. Two modalities were played: WCH7 and WCH4, and only the group data were examined, without any differentiation among the teams, considering both absolute and relative frequencies, as shown in the following table:

TABLE 1 – Contents of Teams Performance in 2ª Wheelchair Handball West Cup
.
Shots Errors - GP: goalpost; O: out; GK: goalkeeper B: blocked (defensive)
Technical Errors – C: conduccion; P: pass or reception; I: invasion; OF: ofensive foul
AE/G – Atack Efectiveness/Goals – 6m; 7m; 9m; FB: fast brake

In the two modalities, the teams have shown a great amount of ET, predominating the Pass Errors (P). About the Finalization Errors, there was a great concentration of defended pitches, while in the Attack Effectiveness (EA/G), there were many 6 meter goals. Specifically in WCH4 it was possible to verify the predominance of counter-attack goals, which can be explained by the constant presence of the goal keepers in the attack positions. That can also have been determinant in WCH4’s greater effectiveness (26,7%), when compared to WCH7’s (27.7%), once you, in the WCH4 the attack is constantly made in numerical superiority (4x3).

DISCUSION/CONCLUSIONS
The results in the present study suggest the need of practice of technical fundaments, pass especially, and 9 meter shots. The high percentage of shots defended by the goalkeeper, in addition to maintaining the importance of the position in the game adapted for the disabled, can be explained by the modality’s short time existence, and must be changed as the number of competitions grows. The strategy of holding competitions in two ways WCH7 and WCH4 allowed the expansion of the number of participating teams, and suggests the possibility of organizing teams by levels of disabilities, providing new opportunities to practice sports for disabled persons who are not yet met by the existing arrangements.
